I am an Indonesian student living in Nijmegen. For the past 3 years, I’ve been busy engaging and empowering the people around me that there is another possibility lifestyle, then just our disposable life. Indonesia is the second country who mismanaged their waste. This makes the sea in the Indonesian water contaminated with waste, especially plastic waste. Because of this, I feel the urge to find a solution to reduce this waste pollution.
My subject is all about waste reduction. The theme focuses on the Zero Waste Lifestyle and a Lifestyle changes. My idea started with my concern on the environment and the urge to take an action. Unfortunately, creating big changes require big support and or a business and I do not have any company or business that can create a big impact. Therefore, I decided to start the sustainable movement from my own home, where I am the decision maker.
Zero waste is a lifestyle to focus on reduction of waste and an effort to not send anything to the landfill or an incinerator. I’ve lived zero waste since 2016 and I would like to share the idea that young people can do something. Idea that you are important.
For me sustainability is all about practice what you preach. I want to proof that there are other ways to be a consumer. That there is solution that might give us contentment in life by reducing our waste because there is no such thing as ‘away’. When we discard our waste, there is someone who must deal with it, or nature who has to deal with it.
I’ve lived in Nijmegen since 2010. I love this city. Last year and during the green capital challenge month, I created 30 days challenge called de Nijmeegse Afval Challenge for the Nijmegen resident to learn on reducing their waste. The challenge got positive response from the resident and the focus of the challenge is to engage the public and shows another possibility of the lifestyle.
